About Us

The Period Project was born out of a realisation that there’s a huge lack of information and understanding given to girls when they start having periods.

As a Registered Nurse and Fertility Nurse and mum to two boys, I was still surprised to learn so much about periods and menstrual cycles, even when I was well into my 30s. I remember feeling ripped off, as this information would have been so helpful in my younger years. I could have understood symptoms, been aware of what my body was actually doing and not have felt complete embarrassment about everything period-related! Everyone deserves to know this stuff and you won’t learn it at school, from your mum, or from friends!

The Period Project aims to drum in that there’s no place for shame or embarrassment when it comes to periods. The earlier we normalise conversations about periods, the better! Girls/menstruators deserve to understand how their bodies work so they can take control of their menstrual cycles and fertility – even when they aren’t having babies. They also deserve to feel empowered and have confidence in their bodies. With better education, girls can better understand their menstrual cycles, and have better periods!

First off, The Period Project is delivering an e-book aimed at teens and their parents or caregivers. This will soon be followed by a printed version (if you prefer the feel of a real book). We’ll be hosting workshops and in-school presentations (watch this space!) and would love to hear from you if you’d like more info.
